The Miss America pageant is this Sunday, but the preliminary competitions began earlier this week and one contestant is already making headlines.
Miss Kansas, Sgt. Theresa Vail, is going to do something no other contestant has done before: she is refusing to hide her two giant tattoos during the bikini walk.
Sgt. Vail says her whole platform revolves around empowering women to overcome stereotypes and break barriers, which is one of the reasons she is choosing to show off her ink.
"What a hypocrite I would be if I covered my ink. How can I tell other women to be fearless and true to themselves if I can't do the same? I am who I am, tattoos and all," Vail said in a recent interview.
So what are her tattoos? Well she has the insignia for the U.S. Army Dental Corps on her left shoulder and has the Serenity Prayer running down her entire right side. She is a senior at Kansas State University, majoring in Chinese and chemistry. She is an expert M16 marksman and a bow hunter, skydiver, boxer, mechanic and former motorcycle racer.
