PASCO, Wash. - On Monday a soldier returned home, but his family had no clue. NBC Right Now was at the Tri-Cities Airport where one soldier gave his grandparents the surprise of a lifetime.
It was like a scene from a movie and something the Robertson family didn't see coming. Operation Thank You is a group of locals who welcome home soldiers from war. The Roberstons have been volunteering with the group for a while. Today, they were told a soldier was coming in that they needed to welcome, but they didn't expect to see their grandson Darrell who was returning home from Afghanistan. Darrell wanted to make sure his arrival was a surprise.
"I can't describe it," said his grandmother. "Because as he came into view and I was looking more and more I thought it looks like Darrell."
His grandmother went on to tell us that she thought she was welcoming home one of Darrell's friends. His arrival was completely unexpected and it left his grandparents in shock. and wiping away tears of happiness.
