Spokane Police Department Press Release:
Monday morning Spokane Police responded to a report of a broken window in the 1800 block of W. Gardner. During the course of the investigation, officers discovered the damage had been caused by an incendiary item and called for Spokane Fire Department Arson Investigators.
Spokane Police had previously responded to several other calls at the same location that indicated the events may have been racially motivated. Agents from our local federal partners offered their assistance in the investigation due to the nature of the events. Officers spent the day interviewing witnesses, victims, and neighbors, and began the process of matching statements with physical evidence.
Detectives determined yesterday's arson event, as well as a separate incident that was reported on November 3rd, were intentionally caused by a tenant living at the victim residence.
The investigation has indicated that the house had been vandalized last month but those incidents appear to be unrelated to the arson investigation.
The victim may be facing 1st degree arson charges. The Spokane Fire Department Arson Investigators will take the lead for any pending arson charges.
