UPDATED PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SPOKANE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE: On Thursday evening, September 6, 2012, at about 7:15 p.m., Spokane County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a call of a female who had fallen off a cliff at the "Indian Painted Rocks" on Rutter Parkway.
Deputies arrived on scene and located the 18 year old female victim near the base of the cliff. Sheriff's Deputy M. Melville and a Spokane County Fire District 9 paramedic checked the 18-year-old female and the paramedic pronounced her deceased at the scene. Deputy Melville spoke with one of the victim's four friends that were at the scene. He told Deputy Melville that they were all hiking on the trail when the victim and one of her friends walked off the trail and started to climb one of the large rocks on the cliff. The witness said he walked down to the base of the cliff, looked up and saw the victim tumbling down the rock face. The witness said he did not see any signs of life from the victim from where he was standing. Deputies on scene determined the death was accidental. It does not appear that alcohol or drugs played a part in the incident. Deputies estimated the total distance the victim fell was about 300 feet. The victim's body was released to the Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office. They will release the victim's name after an autopsy is completed.
