ELLENSBURG, Wash. (May 4) -- Junior Justen Weigel (Naches, Wash./Naches Valley HS) totaled three hits and two runs scored, but the Central Washington University baseball team fell twice to visiting Western Oregon University, 9-0 and 5-3, to wrap up the 2013 regular season on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats finished the regular season with a 28-22 overall record, placing second in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with a 19-13 league record. WOU (31-19, 24-8) won its 12th consecutive GNAC title and the right to host the inaugural GNAC Tournament next Thursday and Friday (May 9-10). CWU and Montana State University Billings will also participate in the tournament.
GAME ONE: Western Oregon 9, CWU 0
The Wildcats managed just four base runners -- all via singles -- against AJ Burke in a 9-0 loss to Western Oregon in Saturday's opener.
Burke, who struck out nine, improved to 7-3 on the season after his complete-game four-hitter for the Wolves. He needed just 103 pitches in recording the nine-inning victory.
WOU scored in each of the first four innings, including a two-run fourth inning, and then scored four more times in the top of the seventh inning. Sam Cameron went 3 for 3 for the Wolves, who saw eight of their nine starting hitters finish with at least one hit.
CWU was held hitless for the first 4 1/3 innings before outfielders Kramer Ferrell (Fr., Ellensburg) and Ethan Sterkel (Jr., Ellensburg) had back-to-back singles in the fifth. However, a double play ball -- one of a combined five twin-killings in the game -- preserved the shutout.
Senior Justin Peterson (Tacoma, Wash./Life Christian Academy) added a single in the sixth but was left stranded, and Weigel led off the ninth with a single before being retired on a double play.
Senior Tyler Roberts (Kennewick, Wash./Southridge HS) allowed five hits and four earned runs in his final regular-season start, falling to 3-6 on the season.
GAME TWO: Western Oregon 5, CWU 3
A back-and-forth game saw Western Oregon score the winning and insurance runs in the top of the seventh as the Wolves completed the doubleheader sweep.
CWU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Weigel had a first-pitch single to start the game. After being sacrificed to second, he came in to score on a RBI single by senior Kyle Sani (Kennewick, Wash./Southridge HS).
The lead held until the top of the fourth, when WOU scored an unearned run after a pair of CWU errors. The Wildcats came back in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead on another RBI hit by Sani -- his GNAC-leading 54th run batted in of the season -- but Western Oregon then countered with two runs in the sixth to go back in front. The Wolves totaled four hits in the inning against a pair of Wildcat relievers, with the go-ahead run scoring on a sacrifice fly by Daniel McNabb on which Ferrell made a diving grab in left field to prevent an extra-base hit.
In the bottom of the sixth, Peterson walked and pinch-runner Joe Castro (Jr., Union City, Calif./James Logan HS) stole second. After back-to-back strikeouts, junior catcher Sam Williams (Seattle, Wash./Bishop Blanchet HS) then delivered a RBI single to left field to tie the game once again.
CWU was one out away from escaping the top of the seventh inning unscathed, but Matt Nylen doubled home Chris Bradshaw and then scored on a single by Tim Rausch to make it a two-run game. CWU had the tying run at bat in the bottom of the seventh but was unable to score against WOU closer Kody Stone, who earned his 13th save of the season.
The Wildcats finished with seven hits, led by Weigel and Sani with two each. Rausch went 3 for 4 for Western Oregon, while Nylen went 2 for 4.
