The Whitworth baseball team split a doubleheader with Lewis & Clark on Saturday at Merkel Field. The Pirates won the first game 15-12, but dropped the second contest 12-4.
The win snapped Whitworth's losing streak at seven games.
It appeared the Pirates would run away with the first game after taking a 15-3 lead with a six-run fifth inning, but Lewis & Clark stormed back with nine unanswered.
Dan Scheibe got the win for the Pirates, despite giving up 10 runs on 17 hits in 6 2/3 innings. Spencer Ansett allowed two runs in 2 1/3 innings, but was credited for the extended save.
Right fielder Thomas Wakem led Whitworth at the plate with five RBIs, three of which came on his first home run of the year, a fifth-inning blast.
Tyler Pfeffer went 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the second game, but the Pirates had trouble on the mound. Carson Blumenthal gave up seven runs in 6 2/3 innings and the bullpen allowed five runs in relief.
Whitworth falls to 10-16-1 on the season and will finish its series with Lewis & Clark on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
